How to Prevent Injuries from Pool Equipment

- Only use toys and pool equipment that are approved for use in the pool.
- Be aware that pool toys aren’t meant to be safety devices. Buy equipment that is specifically designed for pool safety; don’t count on beach balls or air mattresses to save someone from drowning.
- When it comes to equipment for use in cleaning the pool, such as chlorine tablets and skimmers, make sure you always use them in the way they were intended to be used. Always follow directions.
- If you have kids, make sure kids can’t get to the pool easily. Surround the pool with a fence with a gate that locks. Put a safety cover over the pool when not in use. You can even buy pool alarms that let you know if someone is getting into the pool. Buying ring buoys, reaching poles with life hooks and throw ropes is a good idea, too.
- Watch kids at all times. Teach kids that they should always ask permission before going near water. If you are in charge of watching kids while they swim, avoid any distractions.
- Never let anyone swim alone.
- Make sure everyone in the family knows how to swim. The whole family should take courses in first aid, CPR and water safety.
- Always keep a phone near the pool.
- If you can’t find a child, look in the pool first.
- Make sure everyone follows the pool rules, like no running or playing around the pool.
- If you have a diving board at your pool, make sure it is the right size. It can be dangerous if it is too large for the length and depth of the pool. You should inspect the board and its stand for any signs of aging, rust or cracking.
- Don’t allow pool party guests to drink alcohol and use the diving board and don’t allow excessive drinking and swimming.
- Don’t eat or chew gum while swimming.
- Always be extra careful when swimming in a lake or pond. It can be impossible to tell how deep the water is. And if you can reach the bottom, there may be trash, sharp rocks or broken glass that can cause injury.
- Avoid swimming in pools that are overly crowded. This can be unsafe for many reasons, one of which is that, with all of those arms and legs moving around, you could get hit in the face.
