When your infant drinks from a bottle that contains either milk, juice, or formula, it is common for them to fall asleep with the bottle still in their mouth. Many studies have been done that show children who drink fluoridated water from the time of birth have 65% fewer cavities than those who do not. When these same children become teenagers, a majority of them still have no tooth decay.

Tips for Nighttime Oral Care: Don’t Forget to Brush!

You’ve probably heard that you should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss, but did you know you need to take care of your teeth at night, too? Brushing and flossing daily/nightly removes plaque while it’s still soft so that it won’t harden into tartar. Once it does, it can only be removed by a professional dental hygienist or dentist.

Three components to your nighttime oral care:

There are three basic components to a good nighttime oral hygiene schedule:

  • Brushing
  • Flossing
  • Rinsing with mouthwashnighttime oral care

Whether you brush or floss first doesn’t really matter, as long as plaque and leftover food particles are removed. However, there are a couple of differing opinions on this: some experts say that you should probably brush first, then floss, and then finish up with mouthwash. (Brushing first can make it easier to floss.)

Alternatively, some experts say that you should floss first because the fluoride from the toothpaste can get between your teeth better if plaque and debris are removed. The choice is really up to you and your dentist.

Brushing

Brushing removes plaque buildup and can prevent tooth decay, as long as you use fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft bristled brush and brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle in relation to the gums. Brush back and forth gently in short strokes the width of each tooth. Brush outside tooth surfaces, then inside tooth surfaces, and finally, chewing surfaces.

How often should you brush?

The old standard of “at least twice a day” is a good one, although your dentist may tell you something different. That’s because the risk for dental disease is different for each person, and dentists now follow models of dental disease to figure out what each of their patients should do to take care of themselves. If you’re at a low risk for cavities and gum disease, you can wait until bedtime to brush; however, if you’re at high risk for cavities and gum disease, you should brush both just after dinner (or after your last snack), and at bedtime, both.

Flossing

You need to floss because flossing allows you to remove plaque and food debris from between teeth that your brush can’t reach. If you floss every day, you can also help prevent periodontal, or gum, disease.

To floss, use an 18-inch long strand, wind most of it around your middle finger and hold a small section tautly between thumbs and forefingers. Gently guide the floss between your teeth and user rubbing motion to gently move it back and forth. Move toward the gum line, and snuggled the curve of the floss against the teeth rubbing back and forth again. At the root of each tooth, slide the floss into the space between the gum in the tooth and continued to “rub” gently. Move the floss up and away from the gum gently, and repeat for each tooth.

(If you are susceptible to gum disease, you may be told to floss twice a day.)

Rinsing

Rinse with a therapeutic over-the-counter mouthwash (or a prescription mouthwash given to you by your dentist), and swish vigorously between teeth. Follow the instructions on the package. Using therapetic mouthwash kills bacteria, helps keep teeth and gums healthy, and your breath fresh.

Over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwashes can help strengthen teeth, or prevent plaque and/or gingivitis. There are different formulations for different needs, such as tartar control, added fluoride, etc. but if a mouthwash has the American Dental Association‘s seal of approval, it should be fine to use. Avoid using mouthwashes that haven’t been approved by the ADA and that just “freshen breath.”

Has a root canal been recommended for you as a means to repair a damaged, diseased or decayed tooth? If you will be having this procedure for the first time, you probably have a lot of questions. While most dentists explain the procedure quite thoroughly as they are outlining the need for it, those explanations are often light on details about what patients can expect afterwards. Here we’ll go over the basic details of root canal aftercare and recovery to help ensure that you have the information you need to prepare for a successful, comfortable recovery period.

After Your Root Canal

You can expect to feel the effects of the local anesthesia that was used during your root canal for about two hours after your procedure. That means that your mouth will be quite numb. To avoid the risk of serious injury, you should not chew or drink hot or cold liquids until that numbness has faded away and feeling is restored.

When your anesthesia does wear off, you can expect to feel some tenderness in the area of your root canal for a few days. Your jaw may be a little sore as well, due to the extended period it will be open during the procedure. In some cases, there may be mild swelling or bruising around the treatment area. These discomforts are generally mild, easily addressed with over-the-counter pain relievers or mild medications prescribed by your dentist, and typically resolve within a week or less. An antibiotic medication may be prescribed to treat or prevent infection in the treatment area. It is very important to take all prescribed medications – but especially antibiotics – exactly as directed to avoid complications and ensure a comfortable recovery.

Lastly, it is very important that you practice good oral hygiene during your recovery period to help ensure the success of your root canal, and that you do not chew on the treated tooth. Generally, the tooth will be fitted with a temporary filling or crown during your procedure, and placing stress on that tooth should be avoided until a permanent restoration is securely in place.

Situations That Warrant Concern – And A Call To Your Dentist

While root canal treatment is very safe and effective, as with any procedure, there is some risk of developing complications. Signs that may indicate the development of infection – the most common potential complication – include increased pain or tenderness, swelling, bleeding from the gums around the treatment area and/or bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth. Other issues that warrant a call to your dentist include the loss of a temporary filling or crown, or symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction to medications, such as a rash, hives or itching. Again, complications are rare, but knowing – and watching for – signs of trouble is an important aspect of root canal aftercare, helping to ensure a healthy, comfortable recovery.

All-in-all, a root canal procedure and the aftercare and recovery is a fairly straightforward process – despite the common myths and misconceptions about this very common and beneficial means of saving at-risk teeth. It is simple, routine, and, given today’s advanced anesthetics, a comfortable, virtually pain-free procedure. Hot coffee

First, the good news for those coffee addicts out there. Some research has shown that the caffeine in coffee can help to prevent skin cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Other research says that coffee can even help to prevent gum disease. It is thought that this is because of the antioxidants it contains. Coffee, unlike other, more acidic beverages (such as fruit juice), also doesn’t weaken tooth enamel.

However, if you are concerned about how white your teeth are, coffee is a bad choice because it can stain your teeth. These stains also tend to attract food particles and bacteria. Coffee can hurt the lining of your stomach, and drinking it often can lead to heartburn. It makes irritable bowel syndrome gastritis, ulcers, Crohn’s disease and colitis even worse. And of course, the caffeine in coffee can affect how you sleep even hours after you had a cup.

Hot tea

Tea has less caffeine than coffee, and unlike coffee, it can be very good for digestion. You can even choose a kind of tea depending on your digestive problem. Peppermint tea, for instance, can help in the digestion of food. Ginger tea can improve digestion and relieve nausea. Tea with cinnamon can relieve gas, indigestion, heartburn, stomach cramps and nausea. Dandelion tea can relieve upset stomach, improve digestion and act as a mild laxative. And, tea made with lavender, mint, juniper, rosemary or fennel can help to relieve gas.

If you want to try tea to relieve digestive issues, however, you should speak to your doctor first. Some teas aren’t safe for all. For instance, pregnant women should not drink teas made from chamomile, dandelion, black cohosh or dried ginger. As far as your oral health, tea can stain your teeth. However, one study did find that brewed tea, such as green and black tea can help to improve oral health problems, such as gum disease.

Hot chocolate

You may be surprised to find that chocolate has many health benefits. Studies show that chocolate is good for your brain health and can make you think better; it has antioxidants that can reduce the risk of cancer, prevent heart disease, age-related macular degeneration, and premature aging; and it fights depression, anxiety and stress.

With the change in weather, you may notice that your teeth are more sensitive. They may be sensitive to the cold air, or you may notice sensitivity when you are enjoying a nice hot cup of apple cider. This can be caused by a few different things. Infection

If you eat or drink something cold or hot and have pain in the tooth even after the food or liquid is removed, you may need a root canal treatment. A root canal removes the infected tooth pulp, the soft insides of the tooth.

Tooth damage

You may have damage to your tooth, such as a crack or a small fracture. You may not even notice this until a cold fall breeze hits your teeth! Tooth damage should be taken care of right away, before even more serious damage occurs. Dr. Smith may recommend a restoration, such as a filling, a crown or a veneer.

Enamel erosion

Enamel is the substance that covers your tooth. It is a very thin shell, but it is very tough, and one of its functions is to insulate the tooth from heat and cold. Enamel can wear off teeth when you constantly brush your teeth with too much force; when you have a habit of biting down on hard objects, such as pens or fingernails; or when you often eat acidic foods.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is a buildup of plaque on the teeth, and if it isn’t removed, plaque hardens into tartar. Tartar and plaque are both made of bacteria that can harm the teeth and the gums. This can lead to sensitive teeth, and if it is left untreated it can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Bruxism

Many people look forward to fall for the fun of Halloween, the pumpkin patch and the promise of hot chocolate. Other people see fall coming and immediately feel the stress of the upcoming holidays! Stress is just one possible cause of bruxism — the grinding and clenching of the teeth. Bruxism can be another cause of enamel coming off teeth, and it can make teeth sensitive and painful.

Natural Remedies for Ear Infections

Treating an Ear Infection with Coconut Milk and Other Natural Remedies

If you’ve never had one, an ear infection may not seem like a big deal. But if you have had one, you know how much it can hurt! Coconut  or olive oil

Coconut oil has been found to treat some infections. Because garlic also has healing properties, combining the two provides an extra punch when fighting an ear infection. In a small saucepan, heat two garlic cloves and ⅛ cup of coconut oil. Simmer for five minutes then remove from heat. Strain the oil with cheesecloth. Before using in the ears, make sure it is no hotter than 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

Use an eyedropper to place two drops of oil into the ear. Lie on your side for five minutes so the oil has a chance to get into the ear. Use twice a day for seven days. If you are allergic to nuts you may have a reaction to coconut oil. Use olive oil instead, either with the recipe above or by itself. If you use it alone, simply warm some olive oil slightly and put a few drops into the ear.

Essential oils

Many people find relief by massaging the outside of the ear with an essential oil such as thyme, tea tree, eucalyptus, rosemary, chamomile, lavender or oregano. It is thought that massage with an essential oil helps with circulation and drainage of any fluid trapped in the ear. Applying gentle pressure, you should massage in a downward direction behind the ear on the neck and in front of the ear toward the cheek.

Onion

Chop up a small onion and microwave for one to two minutes. When it has cooled, strain out the juice. Put two to three drops into the infected ear and let it settle. Then, let it drain out of your ear. You can try baking an onion for half an hour and then cutting it in half. Put one half in a thick cotton cloth and place the cloth on the ear for five minutes. Repeat after waiting for 10 minutes.

Warm water bottle

Heat can help the ear to feel better. Press a warm compress, a warm water bottle or a heating pad against the ear. However, you shouldn’t apply heat for long periods of time. Only use it for five minutes at a time.

Apple cider or white vinegar

Soak a cotton ball in a solution of one part vinegar with one part water or alcohol. Put the cotton ball in the ear and leave for five minutes.

He is willing to create a 30” by 18” sign with a logo to post at one of the holes. Foot golf is just like golf with a soccer ball and the holes are big enough for the ball to fit. The event will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and there will be a nine-hole shotgun start at the Lake Oswego Muni Golf Course. Teams of four will be the best format for playing. After the round, there will be a catered dinner of brisket, pulled pork and hot dogs. Of course there will be cocktails as well.

This event is being held at the same time as the first ever USFGA National Foot Golf Conference in the world that is being held at the Ben Hogan Learning Center at Rockwood Golf Course in Fort Worth, Texas. As October gets closer, many children look forward to an event that’s singular in experience–Halloween. As early as weeks before the actual holiday, children start preparing for that day, and one of the most creative and enjoyable things they do is carve a pumpkin for a jack-o’-lantern.

As a parent, though, the activity is unique for a different reason–cleaning up after a pumpkin carving can be an experience of its own. Many families make the clean-up more rewarding is by “reusing” one the ingredients thrown out while carving–the pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds can be roasted to create a tasty and convenient post-carving snack.
But is eating pumpkin seeds really a good idea? To answer this question, Dr. Patrick Morrissey from Boones Ferry Dental explains some of the dental health implications of eating roasted pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds might not seem like a lot at first sight, but they actually contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that are very beneficial to a person’s health as a whole. These include but are not limited to traces of:

  • Magnesium, which helps facilitate bone and tooth growth
  • Manganese, which promote healthy bone structure and growth
  • Zinc, which boosts a person’s immune system
  • Iron, used in the production of healthy red blood cells
  • Calcium, which is used to strengthen bone and tooth mass alike

Pumpkin seeds are nutritionally on par with other types of seeds and can benefit a person’s health in many lesser-known ways. Roasting pumpkin seeds, then, is a good way to take advantage of the nutrients naturally found in the plant.

Pumpkin Seeds and Teeth

It would be enough to roast pumpkin seeds based on just the vitamin and minerals found in the seeds, but the benefits of pumpkin seeds goes further than that. As dentists have found out, pumpkin seeds can be good for the teeth.

Part of the benefit does stem from the mineral traces in the seeds. Components of pumpkin seeds like magnesium and calcium are typically described as beneficial to the bones, but these same minerals can provide extra strength and durability to the teeth. Eating pumpkin seeds can cause your body to repair the enamel surfaces of the teeth over time.

However, more of the benefit from pumpkin seeds comes from the fact that the process of chewing on the seeds can spur saliva development. As the body’s natural way of cleaning the mouth and preserving the teeth, saliva is a crucial aspect of oral health. As September rolls around and fall fruits start flooding your local grocery stores, you’re probably excited by a special treat that seems particularly representative of autumn: caramel apples. The sticky, crunchy snack, whether homemade or store-bought, is a go-to treat in many American households.
But, as dentists from Bronitsky Family Dentistry warn, caramel apples, delicious as they may be, aren’t a miracle food. Like many other sweet treats, caramel apples pose some oral health-related issues that are good to keep in mind as you enjoy the autumn.

Apples and Teeth

Surprisingly, the story isn’t entirely a negative one. Sugary additions aside, the base ingredient–the apple–is actually one of those seemingly rare foods that are actually good for the teeth.
Apples are teeth-friendly for two reasons: first, they contain a unique blend of chemicals that help brighten your teeth naturally. The slightly acidic nature of the fruit helps erode bacteria and promotes healthy development of the enamel. This is helped by the second feature of the fruit: eating apples naturally spurs saliva development, boosting the body’s natural defenses against bacteria and healing the teeth along the way.
Of course, too much of a bad thing is never good. The acidic nature of apples can damage the enamel when exposed in large quantities, meaning that you shouldn’t try to snack on apples all the time. However, on balance, apples in their natural state are more of a benefit than a harm for your teeth.

Caramel and Teeth

Apples might be good for your teeth, but it’s the other half of the caramel apple that poses a problem. Caramel, in all its sticky-sweet glory, is one of the most problematic foods for the teeth.
This is again for two reasons: first, the high sugar quantity in caramel is a great attraction to decay-causing bacteria. Because the harmful bacteria feed on sugar, large intakes of artificially sweet foods like caramel can be quite damaging for your teeth. Over time, the bacteria can wear away the enamel on your teeth and cause tooth decay and cavity-formation, making the presence of sugar a very dangerous one indeed.
This isn’t helped by the fact that caramel is also very sticky–not only does the sugar draw bacteria toward the teeth, the stickiness of that sugar means that the bacteria will adhere to the teeth and remain long after the snack is consumed. Even if you can’t taste the caramel, traces of it will linger in the mouth until you brush your teeth fully, and that could mean that hours pass before the sticky substance is eradicated from your mouth.
As a whole, caramel is one of the foods that harm the teeth the most. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a caramel apple once in a while, but it does mean that you should punctuate those experiences with a good toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste.

Dr. Morrissey Stresses the Importance of Heart Disease Prevention

Many are well versed in the so-called “common sense facts” about heart disease prevention: These include eating a healthy diet, watching salt intake, and getting enough exercise and sleep. Far fewer, however, may know that good oral health, including regular visits to a dentist, can also play an important part in heart disease prevention.

Poor dental hygiene can lead to periodontal disease and atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis occurs when cholesterol, calcium, and large white blood cells called macrophages (harbingers of inflammation) build up in artery walls. Periodontal disease can promote this inflammation of blood vessels and make the risk of atherosclerosis more likely. People who have periodontal disease, for example, typically have elevated levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation that is associated with a greater risk of coronary artery disease. Those with periodontal disease also have elevated levels of another marker for inflammation that can mean a patient is at greater risk of heart disease, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2.

In regard to heart disease prevention, preventative periodontics and dentistry are the gentle but effective weapons of choice. Regular exams mean that any signs of gum disease can be caught early. Thorough cleaning and polishing removes plaque buildup and tartar that can cause gum inflammation and, if left unchecked, arteriosclerosis.

Regular checkups can also help prevent and even partially reverse heart disease in patients who already have active periodontal disease

Even when patients already have active periodontal disease, regular checkups can still help prevent heart disease in those patients. Patients who receive good dental care on a regular basis and take their own oral hygiene seriously at home can improve vascular function over time.

One study used something called the carotid intimal medial thickness test to show that treating periodontal disease aggressively can also partially reverse existing vascular disease and thus help reverse and prevent heart disease. This test assesses how thick the plaque located in the carotid arteries is. The thicker the plaque, the less space there is for blood travel through the vessel and the greater risk the patient has for heart disease, including catastrophic events like heart attack and stroke. By the same token, as the plaque build up dissolves, the threat of heart disease and catastrophic events as described lessen.
