Dental Bridges Will Restore Your Smile
Are you missing a tooth or multiple teeth? If yes, then you might benefit from replacing those missing teeth with a dental bridge. Dental bridges are one of the safest and most common treatment options you can get to restore your dental structure. Modern materials and design methods mean that a bridge looks just like your natural smile.
Dental bridges are made up of one or two artificial teeth suspended between crowns on either side. Abutting crowns are placed on the healthy teeth while the artificial tooth or teeth, also called pontics, replace the missing natural teeth.
Many bridges are being supported now by dental implants. In these cases, bridges don’t require crowns on healthy teeth and are supported by the implants themselves. Let’s take a look at some of the common types of dental bridges.
Traditional Bridges
Traditional bridges consist of one or two pontics, or artificial crowns, suspended between two crowns, one on either side of the empty space. The crowns, custom designed for each tooth, are placed on top of the healthy teeth and completely cover them.
Sometimes the dentist needs to reshape the teeth adjacent to the crowned teeth to make sure everything fits properly. The material used to make the replacement teeth can be matched with other teeth.
Implant Supported Bridges
Instead of using healthy adjacent teeth for crowns, this type of bridge is supported by two dental implants with crowns placed on top of them. Dental implants are titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone. Once the titanium integrates with the surrounding bone, it act just like the root of a tooth. This provides a very stable base for the bridge.
Cantilever Bridges
These bridges are slightly different from the traditional bridges as they only have one crown attached with one or more pontics. A crown is placed on one of the adjacent teeth often because there is only one tooth that can be used to support the crown.
Maryland Bonded Bridges
it’s named so because this method was developed by University of Maryland researchers. Instead of crowns, the pontics have small wings on either side which are micro-etched to the adjacent teeth for strong bonding. This way, the healthy teeth are not affected as much while still restoring your smile.
Removable Bridges
Also called partial dentures, the removable bridges are unlike the other bridges in that they are not permanently fixed. They are less stable, but do cost less than other treatment option, which makes them a good alternative for some patients.
